How to Change Your Codex Skin

Which path should you choose?

Choose built-in appearance if:

• you want different colors or fonts;
• you prefer the simplest path;
• you do not need a background image;
• you want to stay within Codex's own controls.

Review Dream Skin if:

• you want a background image;
• you understand that it is unofficial;
• you are willing to check device and version status;
• you are prepared to restore or repeat the setup after updates.

Restore the default look if:

• the app no longer looks right;
• text or controls are hard to use;
• the skin disappeared after an update;
• you are not sure which step failed.

Built-in path

Change colors or fonts inside Codex

1. Open the Codex desktop app.
2. Open Settings from the app menu, or press Cmd+, on macOS or Ctrl+, on Windows.
3. Open Appearance.
4. Choose a base theme and adjust the available accent, background, foreground, UI font, or code font settings.
5. Check Home, Task, and Diff views for readable text and visible controls.
6. To undo the change, return to Appearance and select the previous or default choices.

Result: The appearance changes through Codex's own settings. This path does not add a background image.

Dream Skin path

Add an image with the third-party method

1. Open the Dream Skin guide and choose the macOS or Windows section.
2. Download the original files from Fei-Away/Codex-Dream-Skin.
3. Complete the platform prerequisites before running the installer.
4. Save the restore section and close Codex before installation.
5. Follow the on-site install, start, and verify steps for your platform.
6. Restore immediately if text, navigation, menus, typing, scrolling, or Diff view does not work normally.

The macOS source lock includes user-image customization. The Windows source lock does not. Do not reuse macOS image instructions on Windows.

Check the result

• Codex opens without an unexpected warning.
• Home, Task, and Diff views remain readable.
• Menus, buttons, and scrolling still work.
• The displayed image is the one you chose.
• No private work appears in a screenshot you plan to share.
• You can find the restore steps without returning to search.

Restore

Return to the default appearance

If you used built-in appearance controls, select the default appearance in Codex settings. If you used Dream Skin, stop it and follow the upstream restore steps for your device. Restart Codex and check that the default look has returned.

If the app still behaves unexpectedly, do not keep repeating the same setup. Use the upstream issue tracker for Dream Skin problems or the appropriate Codex support path for app problems.

Common problems

The skin disappeared after an update

The app may have changed. Check the latest status before applying the skin again.

The text is hard to read

Return to the builder, darken the image, strengthen the panel, or choose a clearer text color. Restore the default look if you cannot use the interface comfortably.

The image appears in one view but not another

The third-party method may not match every part of your current Codex version. Check the known limits and last-check date.

I am on Windows and cannot use my image

Do not reuse macOS instructions. Windows custom-image use is not verified by CodexSkin.im.
